This week I’m teaching the children all about adjectives and adverbs, from already covering nouns, pro nouns, verbs and basic punctuation.
First thing first I write down the definition for adverbs and adjectives, then I give them a few examples and make them write it in their book. I then make sure that they have a clear understanding of what an adjective and an adverb is before we move on by giving me examples without looking at their books. Then I move onto writing a sentence in either the adverb or adjectives column and make the children work out if the word I’ve underlined is an adjective or adverb. Once I’ve done this a few times the children then have the opportunity to write their own sentences for their friends to work it out.
Time for some fun, to make it a bit harder I underline a word within the sentence and the children stand up if an adjective or stay sitting down if an adverb. The children then have an opportunity to do this as well to make sure I can see they have a clear understanding. Once this is done I write a few sentences on the board with a missing word which they have to select from above. Once they have selected the right word we then work out if it’s an adjective or an adverb for the children to then explain why. To end the lesson I make the children write down the definition of the key words we’ve learnt with an example to make sure they understand.
