This afternoon I got the opportunity to just watch a session within Magic Bus. I’m glade it was a maths lesson as I was able to understand what was happening with the number being written on the board!
The objective of the lesson was to look at fractions and percentages. The lesson started with the famous Pizza diagram! The pizza started with just sharing it in half and then more people started joining so we had to share the pizza. This was a good visual way of showing the children the visual of how percentages work.
Once this was done we moved on to shading part of the pizza and the children then had to show the fraction. This was a good visual way for the children to understand what fractions and percentages are, but this also is a good way to check the children’s understanding.
To make this a bit harder we even look at making the fraction smaller. The children had to draw out the answer in a pizza diagram just so they could picture it. Once this was done the children were able to understand what was happening as they could draw a new pizza and shade in the appropriate slices.
After the children got the idea of simplifying the fraction we went on to add fractions together. Still with the use of the pizza diagram, the children were able to picture what was happening. The children then had to solve the fraction but then also be able to simplify the fraction if this is needed. To make it harder the children started having to add up bigger numbers just to make sure they got what was happening.
We then went on to timing the fractions together. First, the children had to work out the percentage of the fraction, once this was done the children then came up and had to multiply the fractions. Once they got the answer they then had to try and work out what the percentage was.
By the end of the lesson, the children seemed to have a greater understanding of fractions and percentages, but more importantly, it left us all hungry and wanting a pizza! Just sitting and watching a lesson in Hindi made me realise how hard Magic Bus is trying to help support the children in their education and how fun Maths can be. I do wish I had this much fun when I was being taught Maths!

This is the start of the lesson where the diagram pizza was being introduced with the children.

This was where the children had to multiple the fraction to get the percentage.

This is where the children had to write the fraction which has been drawn on the board.

This was where the children were having to simplify the fractions

This was where the children had to add fractions together with the use of the pizza diagram.

This was the children having to add fractions together but this time the numbers were much bigger to make it harder.
